The SNP successfully launched its 2012 manifesto for the May 3 elections at the Falkirk Stadium with Local Government Minister, Derek MacKay present along with the STV news cameras.
The manifesto entitled, “Taking Our Communities Forward” contains a series of commitments from the SNP that are affordable and sustainable as the SNP seek to reverse the decline within Falkirk Council under the current Labour / Tory coalition.
Introducing the manifesto SNP Group Leader, David Alexander said,
“This manifesto is a manifesto for the people, an example of this being our commitment to reduce the impact of the Labour / Tory charges for essential services on elderly and disabled residents.
We will also seek to reverse the isolationist approach of the current Administration and restore the sense of partnership working that existed when the SNP led the council.
Falkirk Council must become the hub of activity bringing together all of the agencies that should be working together to improve performance in a whole range of area of concern from Homecare to Economic Development.
In the last five years Falkirk Council has retreated more and more into itself failing to recognise the need for more and not less joint working.
We will, for example,
- Include outside talent and partners representatives on the council’s committees.
- Work more closely with partner agencies such as NHS Forth Valley and the Scottish Government.
- Include opposition members in a genuinely inclusive way in a council of all the talents.
- Seek to obtain Community Club status for our local Junior Football Clubs with all the advantages that brings to the local communities.
- More council house building
- Getting our town centre regenerations prorammes back on track”
Derek MacKay spoke of his admiration for the Falkirk SNP team in his time as a Councillor in Renfrew.
Mr MacKay said,
“Falkirk Council SNP Group were trailblazers and many of the policies and programmes originating in Falkirk have become the norm in SNP led Administrations across Scotland.
Your manifesto is a modern forward thinking manifesto that is both visionary and ambitious which recognising the restrictions caused by the savage UK Government cuts.
The people of Falkirk really only have two choices, the vision and ambition shown by the SNP today or more of the mismanagement of Falkirk Council by the current Administration.”
In support of the Team Falkirk were Falkirk East MSP, Angus MacDonald and Falkirk West counterpart, Michael Matheson MSP.
